Social Responsibility

Parliament Buildings Two homeless men Bear - Fish Creek

"In his essays, Emerson said, 'there is a crack in everything God has made.' I submit that one of the central missions of the Unitarian Universalist movement is trying to fix these cracks, repairing the world and creating the Beloved Community of Love and Justice. The inner urge to work in the service of this vision I call the prophetic imperative, the sewing together of spirituality and social action as a seamless garment." — The Prophetic Imperative: Social Gospel in Theory and Practice - Richard S. Gilbert

The Social Responsibility Committee (SRC) seeks to raise awareness and promote action among church members on major social, environmental and economic issues in our society. We offer information and an opportunity to respond on these issues, sometimes in concert with others and always in a manner consistent with the seven principles of the Unitarian-Universalist movement.

Each month, the SRC identifies a particular issue and proposes an "action of the month." An article on the subject appears in the church newsletter. Each Sunday during the month, fuller details on the issue are available at the SRC display shelf in the foyer of the church.

We are organized at present into four focus groups - endeavoring to concentrate on issues of the environment, democracy and international affairs, poverty, and social justice. But you may have a better idea. We're listening.

We need people with ideas, with energy, with insights, with convictions, with compassion, willing to contribute in whatever way they can. We warmly invite you to join us on the second Tuesday of the month, from 7 to 9 pm, in the boardroom at the farm house beside the church.
