Poverty Focus Group

People living in poverty are as different as you and me and have different priorities. And like us, these priorities in need change. We are careful to base the information which follows on what those in need have told us recently.

During the rain and chill of fall and winter, the staff at Our Place (an inner-city drop-in centre in downtown Victoria) advise us that there is a chronic need for socks, towels, sleeping bags, men’s underwear, rain gear, any kind of waterproof footwear, even umbrellas. If you could donate, or purchase for donation in the case of underwear, any of these items, they would be much appreciated by some hard-pressed people.

At the Streetlink emergency shelter, also in downtown Victoria, blankets continue to be needed. Towels, soap, washcloths, combs, shampoo, tooth brushes and paste as well as dental floss and pocket novels are also much appreciated.

There is a box beside the display table in the church foyer for anything you would like to donate. Your gifts will be delivered promptly.

If you would like one of our members to make a purchase on your behalf, we’d be glad to do that. If you have questions, or ideas on how we might assist needy people in other ways, please drop us a line at poverty@victoriaunitarian.ca
